Tissue Scaffold Preparation Techniques

Tissue scaffolds are artificial structures that function as carriers for cells while providing the microenvironment necessary for the proliferation of these cells and supporting three-dimensional tissue formation. Tissue scaffolds that are developed using biocompatible and generally biodegradable biomaterials are placed in the body either alone or together with cells or bioactive molecules for the damaged tissue to regain its function. In this aspect, cell viability and cell-to-cell connection within the scaffold are crucial for the success of the tissue scaffold. This success is dependent on several factors, such as biomaterial chemistry, degradation rate, and compatibility of the mechanical properties of the biomaterial to the target tissue, surface properties of the scaffold, pore size, and pore distribution. Biomaterials used in the field of tissue engineering can be classified as ceramic, metal, synthetic and biological polymers and the combinations of these that are called composites.
