Manufacturing Sustainable Bricks Using Soft Marine Mud Treated with Additives
摘要
Rapid growth of population demands huge housing projects for shelter. In those construction projects, bricks are utilized as one of important construction materials. Traditional fired bricks manufacturing requires huge borrow area apart from high energy consumption and atmosphere pollution during brick. A sustainable and alternative approach to the brick manufacturing process needs to reduce huge energy consumption and environment pollution. The utilization of waste materials from industrial sectors for brick manufacturing can provide a satisfactory solution to environmental friendly procedure while helping to manage the waste effectively. This study is about utilization of waste materials over conventional materials. One of such waste materials is soft marine mud obtained during boring operation of offshore foundation systems. By combining this waste material with other additives like fly ash and Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag, it can be repurposed for brick manufacturing. To achieve higher compressive strength, the mix is treated with a small percentage of cement. Compressive strength tests were done on bricks prepared with different combination of waste materials. Base on obtained results, itis observed that mud treated with additives can be used an economical and sustainable solution for brick production.
