The Credibility of Unofficial Pages on Social Media and Their Role in Shaping Public Opinion
摘要
This research aims at assessing how unofficial social media pages affect the public opinion and whether its information can be credible. The paper examines two major Iraqi Facebook pages, “Alkhwa Alnathifa” and “Iraqis Only,” to investigate the way these platforms framed dissemination of content, establish credibility, and shape public perceptions. Through a descriptive as well as analytic method, the study examines posts of both pages, media support (archival photos-live images–videos-statistics) and issues including political–social-security and economic. These unofficial pages serve a pivotal role in guiding public perception, according to the study, which notes that they often fill voids left by official sources. The results show that, for the most part, “Alkhwa Alnathifa” depends on archival photography for public engagement while “Iraqis Only” relies on immediacy, incorporating live images and videos to indicate reliability. Security topics were the most prominent discussions category, suggesting a first step in lines with public interest. In conclusion, despite the significant role of these unofficial pages in the public opinion formulation process, more accurateness and transparency are required. The need for these platforms to be more ethical and steer clear of misinformation is rein-forced by the fact that its content can significantly influence public opinion on critical issues, particularly those that involve political and security matters.
