Southern Africa’s Coast: Mangroves for Resilience in the Face of Climate Change

Southern Africa's coastal ecosystems, encompassing Mozambique, South Africa, and Namibia, face growing challenges due to climate change, including rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and increased flooding. Mangrove ecosystems, which thrive in these regions, play a vital role in enhancing coastal resilience. This study explores the critical role of mangroves in mitigating climate-induced risks, particularly their ability to reduce vulnerability to storms and flooding through sediment stabilization and coastal protection. The paper highlights the diverse mangrove species in Southern Africa, such as Rhizophora mucronata, Avicennia marina, and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, which contribute to the health of marine habitats and support local livelihoods. Mangroves also offer economic benefits, supporting fisheries, tourism, and coastal protection, which are increasingly threatened by climate change. Effective climate adaptation strategies, including mangrove restoration and conservation, are discussed, with an emphasis on community-based approaches and cross-border cooperation between Southern African nations. The role of mangroves in carbon sequestration is also addressed, underscoring their contribution to global climate change mitigation efforts. Collaborative efforts involving governments, NGOs, and local communities have proven successful in restoring mangrove forests, providing a model for future conservation actions. The chapter concludes with policy recommendations to integrate mangrove conservation into national and regional climate strategies, ensuring that these vital ecosystems contribute to sustainable and resilient coastal development.
