Harnessing Transformative AI Technologies: Pathway to Transformation in Digital Agriculture

In 2013, the African Union, in collaboration with civil society, the private sector, and other stakeholders, committed to ending hunger in Africa by 2025 as part of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP). This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to eradicate poverty, hunger, and malnutrition. However, progress has been hindered by challenges such as climate change, corruption, poor infrastructure, economic instability, and rapid population growth, with food insecurity affecting 239 million Africans, including 30–40% of children under five. This chapter employs a bibliometric methodology to analyse the role of technological innovation in agriculture and its impact on Africa. Using the PRISMA guideline, 7,364 peer-reviewed publications (2020–2023) from the Dimensions database were analysed through VOSviewer software (v.1.6.17). This chapter explores pathways for optimising the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in digital agriculture to drive sustainable transformation in Africa and identifies key trends that enhance productivity and strengthen food systems. The aim is to provide insights into the most effective technological innovations, including precision farming and smart agriculture. Additionally, it seeks to identify challenges as well as sustainable practices that can support long-term agricultural development and resilience.
