An analysis of African food systems shows that war and conflict have had continuing impacts on African food systems. It is critical to acknowledge a complex interplay between armed conflicts and food security, not only in Africa but globally. This chapter comprehensively examines the complexities of the nexus between conflicts and food security, highlighting the full extent of the scourge of war and conflict on African food systems. There is a vast amount of literature on the impact of conflicts on food security globally; however, there is a significant gap in specific analyses that comprehensively and systematically focus on Africa. This chapter addresses this gap by giving a nuanced and holistic analysis of African food systems through qualitative analysis and interpretation of secondary literature. Case studies, scholarly and expert insights on the complex interplay between war and conflict and their impact on African food systems were examined. This comprehensive analysis highlights how war and conflict impact agriculture, food distribution, and market dynamics in Africa. Preliminary findings are that war and conflict directly affect African food systems, including disrupting food distribution networks. This chapter underscores the urgency required in drafting and implementing conflict-oriented strategies in Africa’s food production systems.
