This chapter introduces the book: African Food Systems: Rethinking Prospects for Continental Sustainable Transformation. This is achieved through providing detailed discussions on the key concepts related to food systems. The chapter also discussed the concepts of resilience, sustained development, and digital innovation. The chapter drew from various sources of information available in academic and grey formats. The key issue that emerged from the analysis was that the African food system is in disarray and, thus, requires urgent attention and intervention. In most African countries, food systems depend on other food systems, mainly outside the continent. African food systems are also under attack by climate change hazards, hyperinflation, energy crises, predatory international investments in the agriculture sector, wars and conflicts, inappropriate policies, and a general leadership crisis. This compromises the potential and prospects of food systems to meet their mandate and ensure food security. However, opportunities for change also exist. These include the digitalisation of food system components, from production and processing to food storage and transportation, which wields much potential to transform the system positively. Digitalisation could increase production on farms and ensure food preservation during the rest of the components along the chain to reduce or avoid food waste. However, technology access challenges will need to be addressed radically. This book stands at the intersection of four strands of literature: the literature on agricultural development, food systems, political economy, and digital innovation. Therefore, it wields much potential to inform policy and practical implementation.
