Meghan O’Gieblyn’s God, Human, Animal, Machine: Technology, Metaphor, and the Search for Meaning provides an effective discussion of the many ways we currently misunderstand the differences between computers and human minds. As we shall see, one reason why we may not try to limit the spread and enhancement of AI is that we tend to treat humans like machines and machines like humans. In this reversible metaphor, essential differences are repressed as important values are displaced from one thing to the other. This type of metaphorical thinking relies on what Freud called the primary processes, which often equates different things by first associating them together on a symbolic level. In creating a mental link that hides differences, the meaning of one object can be displaced onto another. Moreover, Freud insists that this form of rhetoric is unintentional and leads to irrational conclusions. It is therefore the task of the critic and analyst to help people to understand the effects of these metaphors.
