In May 2023, hundreds of artificial intelligence experts released a letter stating that, “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.” One reason for their alarm was the rapid advancement in automated forms of information processing: The fear is that as this technology progresses and spreads around the world, we will lose our ability to control it. Moreover, as we shall see throughout the book, any effort to try to limit and control AI through programming could be futile since we have already seen it engage in deceptive and unpredictable actions.
