This introductory chapter explains the process that led to the publication of this book and presents the rationale behind this contributed volume. Qualitative research in psychotherapy has seen significant growth in the Global South, particularly in Latin America. Unlike the strong tradition of Randomized Clinical Trials (RCTs) in North America and Europe, Latin American psychotherapy research has roots in efforts by psychotherapists themselves. This has fostered a dual identity of psychotherapist-researchers, emphasizing the importance of qualitative research to bridge the gap between research and practice. Recent discussions at the Society for Psychotherapy Research (SPR) highlight the need for research to be integral to clinical practice and training. Latin American qualitative research is noted for its creativity and adherence to principles over techniques, making it effective in studying complex psychotherapy subjects. This book provides an overview of qualitative research developments in Latin America, focusing on change in psychotherapy, the psychotherapeutic process, and innovative methods. It aims to balance methodology and creativity, offering valuable insights for training future psychotherapists.
