Shared Digital Leisure Between Grandparents and Grandchildren Before, During, and After the Pandemic
摘要
The humanitarian and health crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) has changed family relationships, particularly the way grandparents interact with their grandchildren. Lockdowns, together with the restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of the virus, have limited intergenerational contact, primarily because of the vulnerability of the elderly. This has resulted in feelings of insecurity and unease for both generations, even causing emotional consequences due to the longing for shared time together. New technological dynamics are proof that the world is moving fast—a scenario that points to the need to continue developing intergenerational digital leisure activities involving grandparents and grandchildren and enhancing human development through valuable experiences. Technology became particularly important, enabling the apparent continuation of intergenerational social relations during lockdowns. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) allow constant contact between grandchildren and grandparents, fostering autonomy and promoting learning on both sides, as well as intergenerational understanding and solidarity. ICTs make it possible to overcome the obstacle of distance by providing a space for social bonding in a context of isolation. This has led to exponential growth in the digital environment.
