Kinetic experiments consist, basically, in measuring the concentrations of one or more reactants or products at different times during the course of the reaction. Experiments are then repeated under different experimental conditions so that, at the end, the researcher can achieve the main goals of the kinetic study: the determination of the overall rate of the reaction and/or that of their individual elementary steps and the analysis of the sequence of elementary steps giving rise to the overall reaction, i.e., the proposal of the reaction mechanism. In this chapter, we aim to show the researcher what preliminary information is needed and what preliminary choices need to be done before attempting to do any experiment to obtain kinetic data.
