We begin by offering an overview of what race, ethnicity, and mixed identity mean and have meant in the Russian-speaking world. Then we will discuss interracial relationships in a transnational context, touching on both Pushkin and the celebrated family of Alexandre Dumas, a surprisingly understudied literary relationship. In it, we discuss the conspiracy circulating on the Russian-speaking internet that both writers were actually the same person and provide evidence that the writers knew one another, with particular attention to the Dumas subtext in the 1828–1830 fragment, “We Were Spending the Evening at the Dacha.” Finally, we will discuss later adaptations of Pushkin’s life and works that translate his story into new contexts, including examples from American and Uzbek writers Alice Randall and Hamid Ismailov, as well as from the Russian-speaking YouTube host Ivanly on. This overview includes suggestions of specific classroom activities and a discussion of relevant secondary scholarship.
