This chapter explores how power can insulate and isolate us from those around us by creating physical, structural and psychological distance. It explains why the more power you have and the longer you’ve had it, the more distance is likely to exist. And it shows how this can have three main effects on leaders. How it can warp and reduce information flow, decreasing openness and changing who says what to whom. How these lower communication levels can create a clarity gap, limiting understanding in both leaders and followers. And how the increased distance can also limit leaders’ empathy and understanding of others’ perspectives. Finally, the chapter explores how one of the consequences of all this for powerholders can be lower-quality relationships and a sense of isolation and loneliness.
