Ubuntu. “I am because we are.” Nuance, discernment, and reflection are all words that describe what is most needed today in media messaging. Engagement and understanding build peace within our local and global communities and underpin the work of media and information literacy. As both a conduit and an influence, the media is the repository for these connections. It is the messenger, the producer, the innovator, and the creator. As people, we live within the frames of the development of the media, and we have become its communicators as encoders, decoders, and even the vehicles for the delivery of its messages. The media has become an augmentation of our person. Our human distinction, which separates us from the media as a tool, is our ability to discern and consider the media as a platform, a vehicle, a tool, and a representation. This chapter is an exploratory look at these issues and seeks to bring these themes and ideas into practice as a means of connecting the work of media literacy education to global change and serve as an entryway to global understanding and peace. Through the exploration of the language of peace and its widely used terminology, a perspective will be provided that demonstrates a synergist relationship within the context of media literacy education.
