Toxic metals affect all organs and organ systems, including the cardiovascular system. The aim of the chapter is to compile and present recent research on the impact of the single metals and metal mixtures on cardiovascular disease (CVD) in humans. Most frequently, studies have focused on the effects on blood pressure and the development of hypertension. Apart from a rise in blood pressure and hypertension following exposure to increasing levels of lead, the precise role that hazardous metals play in the development of CVD has not yet been determined. Data on the cardiovascular effects of exposure to cadmium, arsenic, and mercury are conflicting, and even in studies that show a correlation between exposure to these metals and CVD it is generally modest. Exposure to metal mixtures, with varying concentrations and compositions, makes the research of these effects more difficult. High-quality prospective studies examining the effects of metal mixture cardiotoxicity in populations exposed to a wider range of metal exposures are necessary. In light of all of above, a thorough plan to avoid morbidity as well as deaths from CVD should include efforts to reduce toxic metal exposure.
