Instrumentation: Magnet, Gradients, and Coils

This chapter describes the hardware and software required to generate a magnetic resonance image. The chapter describes the design of an actively shielded solenoidal magnet that generates the main magnetic field in typical high-field (1.5 T and 3.0 T) MR systems. The chapter also describes the design of the gradient systems that generate the magnetic field gradients used for spatial encoding. The description of the gradients is coupled with a brief discussion about spatial encoding and a longer description of radiofrequency pulses and how the two are combined to excite a selected slice to make a two-dimensional image. The chapter continues with a description of transmit/receive and phased array radiofrequency coils and the benefits of each. The chapter finishes with a description of K-space and Fourier transform reconstruction. This is followed by a brief description of the impact of artificial intelligence on the design of MRI scanners.
