Synergistic Plant-Microbe Interactions in Biomining and Bioleaching: Implications for Sustainable Resource Recovery
摘要
Mining and leaching is a means of recovery of valuable/beneficial metals from low-quality ore. Mining is generally faced with some environmental linked challenges such as greenhouse gas emissions. Also residual liquid waste generated from the leaching process is highly acidic in nature. The synergistic interactions between plants and microbes are an integral part of our terrestrial ecosystem and highly promises a more sustainable alternative to conventional mining methods. Various plant species produce exudates, root exudates attracts beneficial microbes, which form mutualistic relationships with plants. Thereby fostering and enhancing their survival and growth especially when targeted for use in biomining and bioleaching. These bio-based approaches gives an edge over traditional mining methods and conventional mining. Exploring this synergism between plant and microbes minimizes negative environmental impact and the consequent effect of global decline in high-grade ore. By replacing risky mining methods and related mining waste, this innovative biotechnological approach has the potential to revolutionize mining worldwide. The end products can also sustainably lower the usage of agrochemicals and facilitate the production of sustainable and healthful food for agricultural sustainability. This review focuses on the role of synergistic plant-microbe interactions in biomining and bioleaching an implication for sustainable agriculture and resource recovery. The study highlights the mechanism, benefits as well as the limitation of biomining and bioleaching in today’s world. While also focusing on the future perspectives and research directions in order to have a sustainable resource recovery system.
