Nanotechnology in Crop Breeding and Genetics

The rapid growing human population has set increasing demands on food and agriculture. However, the present agricultural methods are insufficient to cater to the basic agricultural needs of humans. Enormous use of toxic chemicals like pesticides, insecticides and herbicides have deleterious health effects in living organisms including human beings. Moreover, pests or insects can become resistant to these chemicals rendering the usual pesticides/herbicides ineffective. Nanotechnology in agriculture has resulted in tremendous benefits in enhancing the agricultural productivity, nutritional value as well as shelf life of food substances. Nanotechnology has developed several nanomaterials such as nano-pesticides, nano emulsions and nano-insecticides for enhancing crop productivity and for replacing the conventional toxic chemicals used in agriculture. The use of nano-agricultural products has reduced the human dependency on toxic chemicals for agricultural purposes. In the current time, nanotechnology has also demonstrated its capability to alter the genetic makeup of plants through the introduction of new genes, leading to advancements in crop quality. This chapter provides an overview of the multifaceted role of nanotechnology in agriculture, highlighting its potential to revolutionize various aspects of crop production and precision breeding to advanced gene editing techniques and smart sensor technologies. Nanotechnology holds the key to unlocking sustainable and resilient agricultural practices for the future.
