The essay deals with the astrology & astronomy in the early Renaissance: a rare polychrome Italian zodiac. In particular, it presents the discovery of an exceptional polychrome Italian zodiac clock face from the late 15th century, reminiscent of Cecilia Gonzaga’s daring refusal to marry her father’s imposed political-alliance motivated choice of a groom. This methodological research is rather significant because it shows that this large wooden scientific instrument in the form of a Renaissance zodiac clock face, that has remained silent for so many decades, is a contemporary witness that can offer a unique insight into Early Modern Italian history, provided it is analysed iconographically for this purpose.
