Remote Monitoring Technologies, Quality Control and Legal Issues in Ship Ballast Water Management
摘要
Growing maritime activities and cargo transportation contribute significantly to the discharge of ballast water into the natural environment. This creates serious environmental problems as thousands of species of aquatic organisms are transported through ballast water, along with other forms of pollution. This chapter discusses the importance of ballast water monitoring and management, evaluating various monitoring methods. In particular, it examines the potential of remote monitoring technologies to avoid delays associated with water sampling when ships enter ports. The article analyzes different approaches to monitoring, discusses schemes for installing additional nodes, conducting operations and processing the information obtained. Implementing advanced remote ballast water monitoring technologies will allow ships to save time by eliminating the need for ballast water sampling and analysis before cargo operations at the port. This optimization of the time previously spent on these processes contributes to increased efficiency and speed of ship handling at the port.
