Schools are necessarily adding programs and resources to support the increasing social, emotional, psychological, and nutritional needs of students related to conditions of food insecurity, homelessness, drug and alcohol addiction, family fragility, and trauma. The mission to close achievement gaps that are rooted in socio-economic, zip code, and class disparities is no small endeavor. Although we often swing and miss, we also have hit a few out of the park. Closing the achievement gapachievement gap, which we did, once, was not nearly as complex as closing the responsibility gapresponsibility gap. Educators must engage in public discourse that disrupts the status quo and advocateadvocate for social and economic reforms aligned with closing the achievement gap, the opportunity gap, the race gap, the gender gap, the wealth gap, and the class gap that substantially obstruct school success. School leaders cannot sit back in fear or in shoulder shrugging, depoliticized meme fashion, while our teachers and students become casualties in this crisis of social conscience. We conclude by calling for a reframing of the purpose, and thus the accountabilityaccountability measures of schools, in a context of holistic humanitarian social progress.
