Changing behavior begins with a change in heart. Schools are organically wrapped up in cultural and structural conventions and regulatory boundaries that often seem antithetical to the expectations that they reboot or pivot quickly. And some of our most transformative work manifests in the role of equity officer. The Covid-19 pandemicpandemic tested our resolve in a very public way. There were also many other normalized practices (lunch shaming, gender specific graduation gowns, homogeneous grouping, access to buses, tutors, travel, athletics) that flirted with gender, race, disability, and income inequalities that required significant disruption. Transitioning to viewing our practices through an equity lens did not come easy. Ours was a bumpy, often intimidating, non-linear path. Lesson for us: changing hearts is much more difficult than changing minds!

Transitioning to viewing our practices through an equity lens did not come easy. Ours was a bumpy, often intimidating, non-linear path.
