Sometimes it seems like our focus as educators is on everything but teaching and learning. The carousel of initiativesinitiatives, curriculum challenges from various political perspectives, and endless hours of data collection/analysis are just a few of the myriad of obstacles competing for our attention. Teaching and leading in the twenty-first century requires a great deal of sifting through bureaucratic interference and negotiating an increasingly polarized cultural and political landscape. These external demands come at a time when the social emotional needs of students are at an all-time high. The influx of technology in our lives has dramatically affected the classroom dynamic and not always for the better. While the introduction of one-to-one laptops, smart boards, learning management systems, and various other digital resources have been tremendously helpful, the added screen time is not necessarily beneficial for our students. TechnologyTechnology has also been one of the most pervasive obstacles to teaching and learning over the past few decades. The most engaging lessons typically cannot compete with the allure of flashy social media apps.
