The sale of salt enabled the accumulation of great fortunes. In inland areas far from the sea, there was no shortage of brackish lagoons in Mexico, where salt was exploited and, in some cases, the saline mud was even added to the traditional tortillas. Still, in more arid regions, such as the State of San Luis Potosí, these salty lagoons were only intermittent or temporary, so it was resorted to looking for valleys where saline-sodic soils predominated. Pools are utilized to concentrate and harvest salt from the shallow waters of the lagoon.
