Vertisols are common in the plains around rivers and former lakes in tropical and subtropical areas. They are among the most productive soil types in agriculture due to their high availability of nutrients for plants. Because of their fertility, their presence in flat areas, and proximity to rivers, they have attracted human populations since pre-Hispanic times in Mexico. Due to their clayey nature, Vertisols are challenging for farmers to manage. Besides, deforestation, agriculture, grazing and fires on the adjacent mountain slopes drag sediments toward the lowlands, burying the dark and fertile Vertisols with sediments of low fertility.
