In the montane and humid regions of the Mexican volcanic belt there are abundant forests with preserved black soils rich in edaphic organic matter. These soils, known as Andosols, are deep and generally acidic, developed on volcanic ash, and characterized by a low bulk density. However, these soils are inherently unstable; if the humidity decreases, they transform into Acrisols. Additionally, if these soils are cultivated without proper management, they degrade as they lose their organic matter content, leaving behind hardened volcanic ash layers known as tepetate.
