My first 3 years at medical school, which encompassed 2 years of medical studies and one intercalated BSc in the History of Medicine, were more tumultuous than I had hoped when I left my small coastal home to study to be a doctor in London. When I think back to this time, I recognise that much of my discomfort was because of my inability to match up my new identity as a medical student with the myriad other identities that made up my life. Who was I, and how was this affected by what I do? How did my medical education help me gain not just the knowledge and skills needed to practise safely, but also help me ‘be’ a doctor and feel like ‘part of the club’?

Who was I, and how was this affected by what I do? How did my medical education help me gain not just the knowledge and skills needed to practise safely, but also help me ‘be’ a doctor and feel like ‘part of the club’?
