III.i STATEMENT: The Road Not Taken: Transitioning to Full-Time Medical Education Research From Clinical Practice as a Junior Doctor

For a medic, a non-clinical career in medical education is the epitome of Frost’s less travelled road. The road is even less well travelled if you leave medicine as a junior, who has never enrolled on a formal speciality training pathway. I had been practising medicine for 2 years when I was confronted by two roads diverging ahead of me—one was clinical practice, a well-trodden and familiar path but which, for me, had become untenable after spiralling disillusionment with the profession, and the other was a less well-travelled academic path, but a path which represented a very necessary change.
