This chapter examines the changes in the use of Cornish in the period prior to Dolly Pentreath’s death in 1777 to provide a picture of the language shift in the period before the focus of this book on nineteenth century use of Cornish. It discusses the principal reasons for this decline, using those described by William Scawen (1600–1689) in his writings as a basis for an investigation into why Cornish became an endangered language. The chapter considers the significance of the Reformation, and its effect on wider Cornish culture, including the changes this had on performances of the gwariow meur. The chapter examines the language shift which occurred in Cornwall from the seventeenth century, and the retreat of the language towards the west.
