A tumour is an abnormal mass of tissue caused by excessive growth or division of cells in the body. They may arise from a small number of abnormal cells that grow and divide to expand the size of the lesion over time (neoplasm) or from abnormal and excessive growth of normal cells (hamartoma). The distinction between these tumours is not always important, as it may not change how the tumour is managed.
