Infection of the jawbone, also known as ‘osteomyelitis’, is inflammation of the bone marrow and surrounding outer parts of the bone. While the original description of this condition focuses on the involvement of marrow spaces, current medical literature describes it as an inflammatory process of the entire bone, including the outer layers, while recognising that the disease process is rarely confined to the marrow spaces only.
