The tooth eruption process refers to the axial movement of teeth from their developmental positions within the bone, through the soft tissues of the jaw and the overlying mucosa, into their functional occlusal positions in the oral cavity. This process is divided into three main phases; (1) the pre-eruptive phase, where the tooth germ moves within the tooth crypt; (2) the eruptive phase, which starts with the formation of the root and continues as the tooth germ grows and emerges into the oral cavity; (3) the functional phase, during which the teeth adjust to maintain their functional occlusion and establish initial occlusal contacts.
