Different types of facial muscles have different functions. Some allow an individual to express their face and are referred to as the ‘muscles of facial expression’. These muscles control activities such as frowning, smiling and whistling. Other facial muscles control movements of the jaw. These are referred to as the ‘muscles of mastication’. While mastication refers to chewing, these muscles can perform various other functions, such as teeth clenching and yawning.
