In Uganda, advocacy, legislative and litigation efforts toward a move to prohibit the exchange of bride gifts have been met with resistance from the populace. In a bid to address the practice of families charging exorbitant bride prices, the Acholi Community Traditional Clan leadership passed a by-law that limits the amount of bride wealth irrespective of the educational standing or family background of the intended bride. Is this strategy the solution to the conundrum? Premised upon this reality, this chapter seeks to examine the value of the customary practice of exchange of bride wealth in celebration of customary marriages in Uganda. I assert that even as we embark on the decolonisation agenda to re-birth and re-value our African customs and practices, state regulation must continue and only the positive cultural practices consistent with the Constitution and international human rights standards must prevail.
