The increased use of ultrasound has reduced mechanical complications in central venous line insertion but has not eliminated them. Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) remain critical, necessitating standardised clinician education on central line placement and maintenance. Emerging technologies, such as real-time ultrasound guidance and magnetic devices, improve visualisation and accuracy, reducing complications. New technologies, including photoacoustic needles, needle guards, and smart glasses, enhance procedural safety and efficiency. 3D ultrasound probes offer detailed imaging but have mixed evidence regarding their effectiveness in central line placement. Research shows high complication rates associated with central venous catheters (CVCs), emphasising the importance of best practices to prevent central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI). Factors like prolonged hospital stay, type of hospitalisation, and location of the central line influence CLABSI risk. Recommendations from international health organisations stress the importance of integrating best practices, training, and maintaining a supportive culture to prevent infections. Simulation training is crucial for clinicians, focusing on technical skills and infection control. Effective training includes experiential and situated learning, with mentors playing a key role. Standardised educational courses should cover anatomy, ultrasound use, infection control, and post-insertion care, combining didactic education with hands-on training. Certification and ongoing education are essential for ensuring clinician competence and improving patient outcomes.
