Long-term central venous access plays a crucial role in medical care, particularly for patients requiring frequent or long-duration intravenous therapies. More and more often at bigger referral points of care, a multidisciplinary team is completely dedicated to their implantation and maintenance, composed of nurses usually under one or more physician (anesthesiologist or interventional radiologist) supervision. Totally implantable devices, even if requiring dedicated physicians for their placement procedure, have dramatically changed chemotherapy regimens acceptability from cancer patients and provide a reliable access for all patients requiring repeated infusional treatments. However, careful consideration of indications, proper insertion technique, vigilant maintenance, and prompt management of complications are essential to ensure optimal outcomes.
