eDrinking 50+: Designing a User-Centered System to Enhance Hydration in Middle-Aged Adults

Adequate water intake is crucial for maintaining optimal health and supporting the proper functioning of the human body. Insufficient daily water consumption can adversely affect mental and physical health and impact the digestive, respiratory, and nervous systems. Despite these health implications, a substantial portion of the adult population fails to meet the recommended daily water intake, with middle-aged adults (ages 50–65) exhibiting the lowest consumption levels. Although numerous commercial apps and technologies aim to promote and monitor water intake, a notable gap exists in interactive systems designed to cater to middle-aged adults’ unique characteristics, needs, preferences, and behaviors. We employed the RABBIT methodology to address this issue, which guided a user-centered design and development process. This approach allowed us to iteratively identify and incorporate the specific characteristics, needs, preferences, and behaviors of Mexican middle-aged adults into the design of our technology. The outcome of this process is eDrinking 50+, a comprehensive system comprising a mobile app and a physical device designed to facilitate and automate the tracking and recording of daily water intake. The eDrinking 50+ system includes a water intake tracker, reminders, historical intake logs, and motivational messages. A pilot evaluation of eDrinking 50+ demonstrated enhanced usability and acceptability, attributable to its alignment with this age group’s specific needs and characteristics. These promising results suggest that eDrinking 50+ could potentially improve water intake among middle-aged adults. However, further research is needed to fully evaluate the system’s effectiveness in promoting water consumption.
