The Impact of COVID-19 in Mozambique: Health and Health System

This chapter summarizes the impact of pandemic COVID 19Pandemic-Covid-19 in MozambiqueMozambique, particularly in the Health SystemHealth system, the risk factors associated to the disease and the country epidemiological profileEpidemiological profile in the post-COVIDPost-COVID-19-19 period. COVID-19 was primarily discovered in China and until February 23rd, 2020, more than 77,000 cases of COVID-19COVID-19 infection and 60% of confirmed cases were reported in the city of Wuhan. In MozambiqueMozambique, the first case of COVID-19 infection was confirmed on March 22. Since then, the disease infected a total number of 137,413 people and caused 1,690 official deaths (MISAU, 25/03/2020— http://www.misau.gov.mz/index.php/informacao-sobrecprpnavirus-covid-19 ; (MISAU, 20 May 2020). The negative impact caused by this disease was enormous, affecting different areas of development. However, for the interest of this document, we underline here the consequences brought to National Health SystemHealth system in terms of provision of services; demand of services by patients especially in the area of maternal –child health care. It also analyses the implication of the disease on the epidemiological featuresEpidemiological feature of the country; measures implemented by the GovernmentGovernment to overcome the situation. At the end, the reports recommend the need for more investment either in financial resources or material and specific equipment to increase the capacity of public healthPublic health hospitals to prevent and minimize the prevalence and incidenceIncidence of the disease, and revert the epidemiological profileEpidemiological profile of the country.
