The topic of this chapter is to contextualize and unpack genderGender-transformative approachesGender-transformative approaches in climate change adaptationClimate change adaptation pathways. The conceptual understanding of transformative approaches is motivated primarily by three questions. First, what does the genderGender-transformative approach mean in the context of climate change adaptationClimate change adaptation, and how is it different from genderGender-sensitive and genderGender-responsive approaches? Second, why do we need genderGender-transformative approachesGender-transformative approaches, and how can climate change adaptationClimate change adaptation pathways provide opportunities for social transformationsTransformation associated with sustainable development? Third, how can these social transformationsTransformation take place or what can be the framework for GenderGender-transformative approaches? Synthesizing existing literature and knowledge on climate change adaptationClimate change adaptation and feminist literature, the study finds that transformative changes are inevitable when communities and societies change their ways of livelihood and lives to adapt to climate changeClimate change. These pathways are bound to change the gendered roles and traditional socio-cultural ways of life both negatively and positively, leading to social transformationsTransformation. We argue that a combination of GenderGender-transformative approaches in research and appropriate adaptationAdaptation programmes have the potential to shift “ways of life” from “business-as-usual.” While adaptationAdaptation policies can place vulnerable womenWomen at the centre of adaptationAdaptation efforts, GenderGender-transformative approaches in research can re-imagine unique methods that lead to co-creation and co-learning of new roles and values giving womenWomen the agency to become the “new change-makers.” This can be done by innovative pathways that question and try to change the traditional societal narratives to new stories of change.
