Supporting the Treatment of Allergic Rhinitis:Anti-inflammatory and Symptom-Relief Activities of an Herbal Nasal Spray

Introduction: Antihistamines used for treating allergic rhinitis cause drowsiness, while prolonged use of high-dose corticosteroid sprays can lead to nasal mucosal ulcers and perforation. This study aims to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of a commercial herbal nasal spray, containing Lonicera japonica, Scutellaria baicalensis, Forsythia suspensa, eucalyptol, menthol, and camphor, compared to a topical corticosteroid spray combined with acupressure methods. Methodology: The anti-inflammatory activity was assessed using bovine serum albumin denaturation for the extracts of Forsythia suspensa, Lonicera japonica, and Scutellaria baicalensis, as well as their combination in the nasal spray. The clinical study was conducted on 124 patients diagnosed with allergic rhinitis who were divided into two groups and treated with either the nasal spray or Rhinocort, combined with nasal saline rinses and acupressure. Results: The extracts showed 100% inhibition of bovine serum albumin denaturation at surveyed concentrations, proving the formula of the herbal spray ingredients. After two weeks of treatment, the SNOT-22 questionnaire scores decreased by 17.3 ± 7.7 and 19.2 ± 11.3% for the nasal spray and Rhinocort groups, respectively. Other criteria such as nasal, non-nasal, ear-facial, sleep-affecting, and psychological symptoms, also produced similar results with significant statistical differences (p* < 0.01) after versus before the treatment, along with equivalent effectiveness between the two medications (p-value > 0.05). Discussion and conclusion: The obtained results demonstrate that the herbal nasal spray has excellent anti-inflammatory activities to effectively reduce allergic rhinitis symptoms, compared to the corticosteroid spray.
