Perilla frutescens L. is commonly used in culinary and traditional medicine. Stems and leaves of P. frutescens possess enormous amounts of bioactive secondary metabolites such as essential oils, flavonoids, phenolic acids, triterpenoids, vitamin E… used in the treatment of asthma, anti-allergy, diabetes, gout, skin diseases and anti-cancer. Leaves of P. frutescens collected in Tien Giang province, Vietnam were studied for molecular biological identification using DNA identification method. The extract of P. frutescens leaves is extracted by cold soaking method with ethanol 70% solvent, then evaporated into a concentrated concentrate with a moisture content of 7.59%. Antibacterial activity was evaluated based on microdilution methods. The ability to inhibit α-glucosidase and α-amylase enzymes was determined by 96 plates method. The results of DNA identification showed that the medicinal sample matched the gene sequences on the NCBI bank and reference documents. In antibacterial activity, the leaf extract of P. frutescens inhibited the growth of microbial strains positive gram (MRSA, MSSA) and negative gram (E. coli, P. aeruginosa), of which MRSA is the most sensitive strain with MIC = 0.63 mg/mL. The ability to inhibit α-glucosidase and α-amylase has IC50 values ​​of 1.18 ± 0.05 mg/mL and 1.27 ± 0.038 mg/mL, respectively, which are 10.72 and 3.46 times higher than the acarbose control sample. The research shows that leaf extract from P. frutescens show moderate antibacterial activity on tested microbial strains as well as ability to inhibit α-glucosidase, α-amylase, which may due to contribute to lower of blood glucose in diabetic patients.
