Introduction: Elevated blood uric acid levels and the inflammatory deposition of urate crystals in tissues, especially in the joints, are the hallmarks of gout. In this study, the hypouricemic and anti-inflammatory effects of low-level laser therapy were investigated in a gouty model in mice. Methodology: Male Swiss albino mice were intraperitonially injected with potassium oxonate every other day at a dose gradually decreasing from 300 mg/kg to 150 mg/kg for 2 weeks, combined with injecting urate crystals into the ankle joint on day 8. The affected joints were subjected to five minutes of daily laser treatment while the drugs (Diclofenac 10 mg/kg and allopurinol 10 mg/kg) or ethyl acetate extract from the leaves of Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt was administered orally. Results: Treatment with control drugs clearly reduced the blood uric acid levels and the degree of ankle joint swelling in mice. These effects were enhanced when combined with laser treatment of inflamed joints. Perilla extract exhibited a hypouricemic effect but did not show anti-inflammatory effects, even when combined with laser. Conclusion: This implies that using low-level laser treatment in conjunction with the control drugs may enhance its effectiveness in managing gout-induced joint inflammation.
