The focus of this chapter will be the relationship between God and world in Iqbal’s thought. First, it will examine the emergence panentheism in contemporary theology and its benefits in both philosophical and scientific discourse. We will then turn to Iqbal’s conception of God with a focus on the panentheistic elements of his language. In some cases the correlation is very clear, in others, Iqbal’s thought requires some qualification. Once these qualifications are examined, we will describe the particularities of Iqbal’s concept of God and conclude with some reflection on the ways in which Iqbal’s utilization of both panentheist and panpsychist elements strengthens the Ashʿarī occasionalism onto which seeks to hold. We will also explore how abandoning Iqbal’s occasionalism for a participatory account of divine action might be another alternative.
