Throughout the past three centuries, fossil energy sources have served as the primary catalysts for economic development and industrialization. Nevertheless, these sources of energy have also been the primary contributors to substantial environmental degradation, resulting in catastrophic consequences for the planet and adverse impacts on socio-economic conditions and overall well-being of its inhabitants. The combustion of fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, thereby contributing to global warming and climate change. In this context, the transition to low-carbon or green energy is imperative, as it should lead to universal access to clean and affordable energy and the eradication of energy poverty. This condition, which currently affects 775 million people worldwide, is reported to be one of the contributing factors to greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation.
