This chapter will present instances and propositions of indigenous ways of knowing as they are applied to climate change action and AI ethics, showing the strength of their propositions but also warning of the danger of falling back on the colonial trope of the “noble savage.” The argument is that in the process of decolonization of thought, one should be aware that the proposition of indigenous ways of knowing is exactly this: methods of knowing, not a fixed set of knowledge that could be magically transferred and that could solve, say, the ecological crisis. The importance of non-Western ways of knowing in this moment of planetary history is shown by its methods and by the proposition of holistic relational understanding that can be applied to any human endeavor (and it is not limited to “knowing nature” differently). Its importance is fundamental because it proposes a way of understanding personhood that was actively forgotten in the colonial and industrialization periods: the relational personhood, understanding from which everything else derives. Approached from this perspective, not only the climate change challenge but also our understanding of AI may gain whole new dimensions.

摘要
