This study examined the attitudes of Translation and Interpreting programme lecturers and students towards the use of L1 in a university-level Intensive English Programme (IEP) in Türkiye. A total of 42 students and seven lecturers participated in the study, which involved a Likert-type questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The research revealed that translanguaging is widely utilised for learning and teaching, regardless of instructors’ permission. The results showed differing opinions on the role of students’ L1 in L2 classrooms. The study suggests integrating translanguaging practices into current curricula as an effective learning and teaching tool in tertiary IEPs in Türkiye and other countries.
