This chapter presents the difficulty in outlining a history for the writing of the Icelandic saga genre. It deals with and dismisses the concept “post-classical Íslendingasögur,” and it discusses sagas in the light of observations made in the study of trash cinema. It raises the possibility of some sagas being read as trash literature and discusses the importance of the manuscript context when analysing a saga and genre. The chapter then questions the concept of the post-classical Íslendingasögur, as well as suggesting a discussion of Icelandic history that focuses on history through a polysystem theory-minded analysis.
