Innovations on the Horizon: Technology Advancements for Fire Management
摘要
In recent years, the intensity and frequency of forest fires have escalated significantly, primarily due to rising global temperatures, resulting in severe environmental consequences. The environmental and economic damage caused by forest fires underscores the importance of early prediction and detection for effective management strategies. While manual patrols remain essential for fire monitoring, deploying advanced technologies, including remote sensing and fire detectors, can substantially enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of these efforts. Researchers worldwide have introduced various technologies and techniques for anticipating and detecting forest fires. Despite these advancements, there is an ongoing need for innovative technologies and integrated management systems to accurately forecast fire likelihood, assess the risk of fire-induced damage, and manage future fire events. This chapter explores a range of innovations and new technologies for forest fire management, covering aspects from prediction and prevention to the restoration of burnt forest areas. It also discusses emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), geospatial technologies, 5G and enhanced connectivity, the Internet of Things (IoT), the Internet of Behaviours (IoB), virtual and augmented reality, and robotics and their applications in forest fire management.
