Utopian thinking often emerges out of uchronic thinking. The concept of time is a rich source of utopianism, though in a peculiar way. The Christian theological tradition has a complex view of different times running parallel to one another. This proved to be highly seminal for political theology and theory. This essay focuses on two political texts, the Preamble of the US Constitution and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, and shows how they rely on two main traditional concepts of time: the eternal present and the eschaton. They are foundational for modern democracies, and effectively transpose them above history and into a uchronic condition. Thus, these democracies effectively become utopias, which explains why classic utopian fantasizing has very limited appeal.
